Where we skied
Wolf Creek was our choice for this winter (2025-2026). We like to get a ski pass, stay put for the winter, and really get to know a ski area. We’re from Colorado and we always wanted to ski here. It’s known for the most snow in Colorado. That was true this year, though it felt like we waited for winter to start and it never did. It was the worst winter in decades. We did get some fun ski days in and even better - family and friends came to visit. That definitely made being in Colorado fun. Some came to soak in the hot springs, some came to ski. Here is a little video of us getting up to the snowcat at Wolf Creek.
Kelly got a job at Wolf Creek, driving a shuttle. These were long work days. A lot of ski areas hire young adults from other countries here on J1 work visas. Kelly would get up and shuttle them up Wolf Creek Pass so they could start their work day then drive skiers and riders from and to their cars in the parking lot throughout the day. When the J1s were done working, he’d drive them back down.
We had gone back and forth on whether to stay on the Pagosa side or South Fork side of Wolf Creek. We chose Pagosa for better grocery options and the hot springs. Ooh, the hot springs. A neighbor worked at Healing Waters and got us a deal on a 10-punch card. To go soak after a day of skiing is perfect.
The South Fork side is pretty and I think we would’ve been happy there, too.
Cuchara had been closed since 2000. It opened this year with the help of a great group of enthusiastic volunteers and we were so happy to spend an afternoon on skis there.
Well, to hear about this AMAZING HELI SKI TRIP, you just have to watch the video: Someday. Silverton. Yes. Helicopter + Skiing!
Where we stayed
I joined the Pagosa Springs Facebook group once we decided that’s where we would spend the winter. Someone posted that they had a few RV spots close to town. We were four hours away at the time of seeing that, so we popped down for the weekend to check out our options. We chose that one.

While you’re in Pagosa, be sure to stop by Faire Society for a lovely coffee and an amazing cinnamon roll croissant. Then, go walk by the river. It stinks like the sulfur from the natural hot springs, but it’s a lovely walk. Of course, go enjoy the hot springs. There are three paid hot springs in town and a few ‘hippie' dips’. They’re all unique.
