The RV-Bug Bite
The RV bug bit while watching an RV show on TV on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Then we started watching full-time RVers on YouTube. Then the daydreaming.
Next was the window-shopping for types of RVs. A travel trailer made the most sense for us. I wanted a separate office space. I definitely hold a line between work and personal life, even if it’s just a few steps away - and when living in a 31’ space, it’s literally a few steps away. I’d already been working remotely for a few years. This could work. Kelly, my born-and-raised Colorado native husband, wasn’t so sure. Clearly, this changed, but at the time, he had plenty of questions and scenarios to process. I reminded him that we could always get back, if or when needed. Kelly had campers and fifth wheels before. I’d only been on one once on a weekend trip when we borrowed my mom’s.
Our Travel Trailer
We found the North Trail 24DBS. It has a bunkroom. Kelly removed the bunk beds, and we found a desk that fit the spot perfectly. We saw one in Colorado Springs and made an offer. The dealership wouldn’t budge. This turned out to be a blessing. We ordered our RV from Couch’s RV in Ohio. We got a deal we were happy with, and they delivered it to us - with upgrades! It came with an electric fireplace we didn’t think we wanted. We thought we wanted the storage space instead. The fireplace is AMAZING.
Chilly mornings + hot coffee + the fireplace = Bliss.
We kept the dinette for a couple of years, then put that in storage and added two recliners, two swivel tables, and a table (with storage) between.
My office has changed many times. It’s funny how much you can do with a small space. We added the upper bunk back in. That’s the cat’s personal space, storage underneath. I now have a standing desk in front of the back window. I love my office view, though not always beautiful, I love that it changes.
Just 1 year
I don’t know the percentage of full-time RVers who have said they’d be on the road for just a year, but I know it’s high. I ask Kelly a couple of times each year - Do you want to get a house or keep traveling? Let’s keep traveling.
Normal
It’s funny that this is our normal now. I work 4 days per week. In the winters, we pick a ski area we haven’t yet skied, get a pass, find a winter spot, and enjoy the whole season getting to know that mountain and community. In the other seasons, we move on Wednesdays, explore on the weekends, and stay in an area until we learn how the locals pronounce that odd thing in that town. In 4.5 years, most people would have covered a lot more ground. We’re good with our slow route. We know we love hiking, Amish bakeries, local festivals, and especially long visits with family we would have previously just seen at weddings and funerals.
